  5. ERICA ROSE

Erica Rose of Cleveland Heights won the Manhattan Island Marathon swim finishing 28.5-mile course in 7 hours, and 29 minutes around Manhattan. Erica developed a passion for swimming at a very young age, and she proved her record by winning on Saturday in New York. Erica wore a GPS tag, so you could pinpoint every stroke of the race. The race is the longest swimming event in the world. It began and ended at South Cove in Battery Park City.Erica was a world champion swimmer before she could even drive. When she was 15-years-old she won the 5K Open Water Championship in Perth, Australia. She has earned 10 national open water titles, four Pan-American titles and one Pan-Pacific titles in distances ranging from 5K to 25K. Erica competed professionally in the World Cup and Grand Prix race series, swimming in oceans in Argentina, Japan, Spain, Italy, United Arab Emirates, and Canadian lakes as well as other places around the world. She has also won the Alcatraz Shark Fest, a race from San Francisco to the former island penitentiary in shark-infested waters. Erica now lives in Ann Arbor, where she works for the University of Michigan in its Development Office. She came out of a three-year retirement from professional swimming to participate in the Manhattan Island Marathon Race. Erica also swims in fundraising events for the U.S. Swimming Make-a-Splash program which teaches disadvantaged children how to swim.

    Shane Gould

Shane is another great Australian swimmer in the world swimming. It is still a mystery that in spite of having a great skill and potential, she retired at the age of 16. However, within her short appearance in the swimming pool, she could able to show her ability to be one of the greatest in the history of swimming. In her only Olympic games appearance in 1972 in Munich she won 5 medals including 3 gold. At that time she was just 15 years old. In that competition she became a part of the history of the women’s swimming winning the three Olympic gold medals with world record in each for the first time in women’s swimming. Her greatness in swimming was proved in the way of her winning all of the Freestyle events from 100m to 1500m with new world record in each. The number of award she got in her short career can be another world record (though I am not sure). She became the Best Sportswoman in the World in 1971 and Australian of the Year in 1972. Later, Order of the British Empire and Olympic Order adorned her award cage.

After her contract with TAPE, Inc. (producer of “Eat Bulaga”) expired, Christine hosted its rival, “Magandang Tanghali Bayan”, in ABS-CBN (“Eat Bulaga” is already airing in GMA Network). She stopped hosting in showbiz in 2001 when she got pregnant to her first child with her husband Francisco "Paco" Sandejas, the brother of Manu Sandejas (Agot Isidro's husband). After 4 years, GMA Network gave her her very own TV show “Mobile Kusina” as GMA knew that she came from the longest-running noontime show “Eat Bulaga” which GMA co-produces. This show ended in early 2007.

In September 1998, the French swimmer Ben Lecomte became the first swimmer to cross the Atlantic Ocean unaided. The swimmer took 78 days to cross the Atlantic, swimming for 6 to 8 hours each day. Lecomte completed the swim using an ocean device consisting of a 25 ft electromagnetic field which protected him from sharks and was followed closely by a support boat. He stopped for one week part way through the swim to rest for a week at the Azores mid-Atlantic after suffering from exhaustion, but defenders say it would have been impossible for the human body to stay in the water for 78 days straight and claim his record breaking title was well deserved.

The 2009 World Championships, in Rome, had Cielo winning the 50 m and 100 m freestyle, the third swimmer to achieve this feat in a single World Championship, after Anthony Ervin and Alexander Popov. Popov and Cielo are the only two swimmers to win Olympic and World Championship gold medals in the 50 m freestyle in succession.[2] Cielo also broke the 100 m freestyle world record in Rome.
On 18 December 2009 he broke the 50 m freestyle world record with 20.91 s at a championship hosted in Esporte Clube Pinheiros,[3] his club in Brazil and where he trained since 2003.
He is also the current holder of the US Open record in the 100yd freestyle (40.92 s) and the 50yd freestyle (18.47 s). It is of note that these performances were done in textile suits, not in the later polyurethane models.(Although he should have won)

    JOSEPH ERIC BUHAIN

Joseph Eric Buhain (born April 12, 1970) is the chairman of the Philippines' Games and Amusement Board.

Buhain is also popular among Filipinos as a champion swimmer, where he hauled several Southeast Asian Games medals to the Philippines.

Eric ventured into swimming not because he dreamed of winning an Olympic gold medal, but because his doctor advised him to venture into sports to improve his lungs. Eric was born with Primary Lung Complex.

He enrolled in a two-week swimming program at the age of seven. Yet his training was breached by another illness, hepatitis. However, this didn't stop him. A year later, he was training again and taking the advance course in swimming, the competitive course, at age nine. It was at this age that he got into the varsity swimming team of De La Salle-Santiago Zobel School and vowed to win a gold medal in the sport.

By 1981, he was a member of the Philippine Team and swam in the 400-meter individual medley at age eleven. But it was in his first Southeast Asian Games in 1985, held in Bangkok, Thailand, where he snatched the gold in the same category at the tender age of fifteen.

In the 1989 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he broke one of the existing SEA Games swimming records. In the 1991 Southeast Asian Games, where the Philippines was the host, he made a huge contribution to the gold medal record of the host country by winning most of the events in swimming. With great jubilation, he was chosen to represent the Philippines in the 1992 Summer Olympics.

  21. Miguel Molina (b.July 22, 1984- ) is an accomplished Filipino swimmer who has competed and won various local and international swimming competitions. He is part of the Philippine contingent to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and competed in Heat 2 of the Men's 200m breaststroke on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 where he finished sixth out of seven with a time of 2:16.94. He also competed in Heat 2 of the 200m individual medley, where he finished second to Norway's Gard Kvale with a time of 2:01.61. While he did not qualify for any of the semifinals, his performance in the 200m Individual Medley set a new Philippine record.
His most notable achievements came during the 24th South East Asian Games held in Thailand in December 2007, where he was named Most Valuable Player. He is only the second Filipino to be given the award, the other being Philippine swimming legend Eric Buhain. He won gold medals in three individual events, namely; 200 meter breast stroke, 200 meter individual medley, and 400 meter individual medley. He won a gold medal in the team 4x100 medley relay together with Daniel Coakley, James Walsh, and Ryan Arabejo and a silver medal in the men's 4x100 freestyle relay again with Coakley, Walsh and Kendrick Uy.
His personal record is 2:01.61 in the 200-meter medley and 2:16.62 in the 200-meter breaststroke.

Michael Fred Phelps (born June 30, 1985) is an American swimmer who has, overall, won 16 Olympic medals—six gold and two bronze at Athens in 2004, and eight gold at Beijing in 2008, becoming the most successful athlete at both of these Olympic Games editions. In doing so he has twice equaled the record eight medals of any type at a single Olympics achieved by Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin at the 1980 Moscow Summer Games. His five golds in individual events tied the single Games record set by Eric Heiden in the 1980 Winter Olympics and equaled by Vitaly Scherbo at the 1992 Summer Games. Phelps holds the record for the most gold medals won in a single Olympics, his eight at the 2008 Beijing Games surpassed American swimmer Mark Spitz's seven-gold performance at Munich in 1972. Phelps' Olympic medal total is second only to the 18 Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina won over three Olympics, including nine gold. Furthermore, he holds the all-time record for most individual gold Olympic medals, at nine.
Phelps's international titles and record breaking performances have earned him the World Swimmer of the Year Award six times and American Swimmer of the Year Award eight times. He has won a total of fifty-nine medals in major international competition, fifty gold, seven silver, and two bronze spanning the Olympics, the World, and the Pan Pacific Championships. His unprecedented Olympic success in 2008 earned Phelps Sports Illustrated magazine's Sportsman of the Year award.
After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps started the Michael Phelps Foundation, which focuses on growing the sport of swimming and promoting healthier lifestyles. As a participant in the US Anti-Doping Agency's "Project Believe" program, Phelps is regularly tested to ensure that his system is clean of performance-enhancing drugs.
