The Gamay Tourism Video Project is our initiative to promote our tourist destinations. Hopefully, this video will help us realize that we are truly blessed of natural wonders and we need to take care and share those gifts. This is also to proudly share to the world that there are small town in the Philippines such as Gamay that worth to visit and to be discovered.

This town is small but a promising municipality. In fact, it was awarded by the Department of Interior and Local Government the "Seal of Good Local Governance in 2018". Also, this municipality has a strict policy in waste disposal and there are environmental advocacy projects for the community.

There are available accommodations for the family or for the barkada such as the Marcela Bed and Breakfast. There are resorts that also accept guests. Direct bus trips from Manila to Gamay Terminal (24 hours travel time) or by plane from Manila to Catarman or Manila to Tacloban (with another van ride to Gamay Integrated Terminal for approximately 3-4 hours) are also available. They have "Lubi-lubi Festival" to thank the Creator for the coconut trees as one of the major source of agricultural products and livelihood and they have a version of Sinulog Festival. Palawan is known for beautiful spots and Port Barton at San Vicente seems to be an emerging tourist favorites. With less than three hours of travel via van ride (600 per head for 5 passengers) from Puerto Princesa Domestic Airport, Port Barton is more convenient to otther destinations.

There are affordable accomodations and varietes of local and international cuisine since there are lots of foreign tourists. During our visit, we stayed at Le Cou De Tou Village Resort along Luna Street, Port Barton Town, San Vicente, Palawan. It was a homely, safe and affordable accomodation.

Summer is back and most of us are excited to visit the nearest pool or beach for a swim. To those who hate traveling to far places, there are many swimming pools in your area to choose from and you just need to check them around.

For swim enthusiasts, they used to find ways of locating the nearest pool wherever they are. For the residents of Dasmarinas or nearby cities in the province of Cavite, may I introduce a new pool in my list, the Antler's Pool. This pool measures 25 (length) x 20 (width) meters and 4 to 5 feet (depth). It is located inside the Antler's Village. The village is composed of dormitories for students and working professionals, a hotel, restaurants and a bank.

The pool is designed for fitness (lap pool) and it is the official training venue of Emilio Aguinaldo College- Cavite and Immaculate Conception Academy Swimming Teams and also the venue for swimming classes of EAC-Cavite Senior High School and Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA-Cavite). College swimming classes are also held in this pool. Anthler's pool is open for public but coordination is necessary to the Jopaen Realty Corporation (JRC) Office. JRC office is located at the second floor of Antler's Square. The rate or entrance fee is 180 pesos per head, the use of cottage is free (First come first serve basis). You can coordinate with the JRC office for more details.

The pool is open daily from 8-5 pm. No need to worry in terms of conflict with the swimming teams because they used to train early or in the late afternoon (weekdays; 5am-7am and 5pm-7pm, weekends; 6am-8am only) . The pool location is serene as there are trees around the area. The Antler's Square serves as the corporate office of the village and accessible via Congressional East Avenue, Burol Main, Dasmarinas City.

It was tree (3) years now since we started dominating the swimming event of the Letramurals Inter-Program Athletic Competition. The official sports activities intended for the college students of the Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

The swimming event started in 2013. My team is the Blue Orioles. This team is composed of dedicated psychology students. I don't have a hard time coaching this group since all of them are really determined to win in every event. They really spend time for training despite of the hectic schedule. The summary of our achievements are:

2013- Champion
2014- Champion
2015- Runner-up

To the former and current members of the blue orioles swimming team, Congratulations!
Assessment in an important aspect of learning. It gives feedback in terms of what to improve, say instruction, facility, or even the specific type of classroom procedure. This blog article is for my students in basic swimming class with a goal of assessing their own skill after the series of sessions. Self-assessment could be basis for evaluating their academic performance if it somehow reflect on their perception. Furthermore, it will help the coach/professor improve specific aspects of instruction and other teaching practices.
To my students, please have your own self evaluation regarding to what have you learned in your basic swimming class. There are two (2) required self evaluation procedures to accomplish:

1. Narrative- for the narrative response, post it as a comment below this blog article (one (1) paragraph, minimum of three (3) sentences). Please follow the following format:

Name: Juana dela Cruz
Year & Section: HRM2A

Guide question: In a score of 1-10 (1 is the lowest, 10 being the highest) in terms of swimming skill, how would you rate yourself and why?

(Write your answer here, 1 paragraph, 3 sentences)

2. Answer the Self-assessment of swimming ability (Jelka Gošnik , Natalija Špehar and Ksenija Fučkar Reichel, 2010)- Click the link below then answer the multiple choice survey.
Floating is an important skill in learning the different strokes. Learning to float indicates that the student is ready for the next learning skill. It further shows the confidence of the swimmer in the water. Prone floating is an important skill for the freestyle/frontcrawl while back float is important for the backstroke. Aside from the prone float and back float, there are other types of float to explore, namely;
Basic swimming class is could be challenging to students with zero knowledge in swimming or those with traumatic experience in the water. Student with basic swimming skill that he or she obtained from a swimming school will surely feel the advantage. They could also have different expectations.

It is important that the teacher knows the expectation of the students to facilitate effective instruction. Based on my experience in coaching, the students usually expect the following.

1. Teacher is approachable so that students will not hesitate to ask questions.
2. The instruction should be clear and lessons are organized.
3. Lessons are demonstrated properly.
4. Enough time to practice the lessons.
5. Being objective in scoring practical tests.

Your own expectation is maybe not listed. Share at least two expectations to help your swimming teacher delivers better instruction. Your expectation will be a great contribution to the success of your swimming class.
Swimming skill is not a total guarantee of safety. Even good swimmers need to swim with a buddy or at least with other people around. Being aware of the environment (pool areas) will help you avoid accident and maintain total safety. There are swimming pools with low maintenance in which, some areas should be avoided. Even the well-maintained pool is not also a guarantee. Drowning happens even in high-end condominiums, resorts and hotels. Kids MUST be accompanied by adults even if they are competitive swimmers. Do not rely to lifeguard-on-duty alone. Accidents may occur anytime and anywhere but being cautious and being prepared does a great impact to achieve safety.
To avoid accident, I listed some areas in the pool to avoid when swimming. Check if you happen to see some of the areas listed.

1. Slippery pool deck/walk ways or open shower areas
Slippery areas can cause you harm and injury. Some types of tiles are slippery when wet. Walkways with slime molds and algae are usually slippery, so, avoid those areas or be careful when walking. Molds and algae usually appear during rainy season. It would also help if you will tell the other swimmers and the management to keep the area mold and algae free.

2. Cracked tiles
Cracked tiles are dangerous because it may cut your skin. Using your goggles, you can check cracked tiles under the water. Cracked tiles is more dangerous in the four feet deep water areas where swimmers can stand and touch the floor. It is even more dangerous if located in the stair area.

3. Contaminated pool water
Color and smell of the water could be an indication of contamination. Green is an indication that molds and fungus are present in the water. Don't risk you health by swimming in contaminated water. If you happen to drink the dirty pool water, you may drink pro-biotic drinks after swimming to avoid stomach ache or other water-borne disease.

3. Electric shock prone areas
It is every little girls dream to be a princess, no doubt, this is really common among them. But time has changed, now, from princess, its is now every little girls dream to be a mermaid princess. No wonder why the local television networks included mermaid as one of the themes in primetime and telebabad shows. Dyesebel (the iconic and legendary mermaid) and Kambal Sirena (newest creation of mermaid-themed fantasy drama) aired like really intended for long summer vacation while most activities are swimming in the beach and in other water forms. As a result, mermaid swim or locally known as "langoy sirena," is now a popular stroke among the kids and even among adults. It is a swimming style that utilizes dolphin kick and mimic the swim of a mermaid.
In the technical level, the closest to mermaid swim is finswimming, more specifically, the monofin swimming. It is a swimming technique that uses an accessory (monofin) to swim like a dolphin. According to en.wikipedia.org, Monofin is a type of swimfin that is typically used in underwater sports such as finswimming and freediving. This type of swimming advances the speed of the swimmer into 3 seconds more faster than the usual. The first type of swimming fin was made of rubber. It was developed by a French Commander De Corlieu. On the other hand, monofin was invented by Ukrainian finswimming team in 1972. Other variations are bifin and paddle fins. Is monofin a sport? Yes, It is a sport. In fact, the first bi-annual world championship competition for a monofin swimming started in 1962 and it was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1986.
What skills are needed to learn it? Basic swimming skill is needed to learn monofin but even without the formal swimming lesson but knows how to swim for survival can also learn monofin swimming. The most needed and necessary skill is treading for survival in the deep water. It would also be an advantage if you know how to do gliding with undulation and dolphin kick from the butterfly stroke.
It's an amazing discovery. There is a small but homely recreation pool in Mandaluyong City. Summer is really full of great surprises. I was able to experience a luxurious splash in one of the best hotels in Mandaluyong, The Legend Villas. FreelaceAquaticsSolution facilitated the swimming lesson event of Mom and Me. Mom and Me is an event organizing company that advocates the importance of mother and daughter bonding. The "The Legend Villas", is the major Sponsor of such fun-to-fit mother and daughter summer swimming activity.
The pool is kidney shape with approximately 15 meters in length and 5 meters in width. Its deep is 4 feet to 7 feet. It has poolside jacuzzi and artificial waterfalls. The comfort rooms are clean and air-conditioned. Water is distinctly clean and chlorine content is just enough for the volume of water. The pool deck (walkway area) is made-up of wood . According to the Marketing Officer, the pool area is one of the favorite venues of parties and events. Pool is a potential venue of kids swimming lesson with six students per class for ages 6 to 12. A function hall is situated beside the pool area that can be used as extension of pool parties. The pool is open daily from 8:00am to 6:00pm. It is exactly located at 60 Pioneer Corner Madison Streets, Mandaluyong City. It can be reached via Boni Avenue MRT station and a ten (10) minutes walk from Robinsons Mall.
Swimming in your most preferred pool is really cool. In Metro Manila, there are lots of swimming pool to choose from, whether its a private or public pool, lap or recreation pool. In my area, I am blessed to have three lap swimming pools, namely Philippine Army Swimming Pool, Philippine Navy Swimming Pool, and Philippine Air Force Swimming Pool. These three pools became the venue of my swimming activities. As part of my promotions and love for swimming, I used to explore swimming pools. Among the pools that I visited for pool hopping or swimming activities, I listed the top five of my favorite recreation pools. Recreation pool is generally design for relaxation and leisure.

Top 5. Caliraya Recreation Center

I was able to experience this pool (resort) twice. First, was due to retreat, and second, was due to company outing from my former employer. It has a diving board suited for basic and advance level. This pool is one of the amenities of the recreation center. There were only one pool during my stay, now there were two. Water is very cold since it is located in a mountain. The deepest part is about 10 feet, while the shallowest is about 4 feet. There is lifeguard on duty, so nothing to worry about safety. For info about Caliraya, visit www.caliraya.net.

Top 4. White Corals Beach Resort

White corals is the only saltwater pool I have known so far. It's cool to experience this kind of amenity. You can enjoy both the stylish shape of a recreation pool and the saltwater. They also have a freshwater pool as an option if you want something usual. While swimming in the saltwater pool, you can experience the view of the beach. Other activities are kayaking and snorkeling.

Top 3. Club Balai Isabel

(Club Balai Isabel Infinity Pool)

Club Balai Isabel offers an amazing scenery of Taal lake. This is famous in weddings and team-building activities. I was able to visit this place as part of a team building activity. The best attraction (being a swimming enthusiast) is the wide infinity pools facing the lake area. Great for relaxation. You can have a touch of nature. You will also love the food as well and the good service. For more info about the club you can visit www.balaiisabel.com

Top 2. Serendra One

(One of Serendra One's Pool)

I ranked this pool in the second spot not because it is part of a high-end high-rise condominium in the metro but because of its water. This pool is the only non-chlorinated I have known (aside from the free-flowing freshwater falls and spring water pool). This pool uses the latest technology in pool maintenance and management. I was able to swim in this pool five times due to my of private swimming lessons.

Top 1. Ace Water Spa

My top one is the Ace Water Spa. This pool offers leisure, relaxation, and health. You can enjoy the water while experiencing their water massage facilities. There are saunas and steam baths. The most fascinating part of all are the herbal pools that will surely relieve you from your daily stress. This is one way of pampering and rewarding yourself from your hardworking days. Swimming lessons are also offered in the resort spa. Visit www.acewaterspa.com.ph for info.
I had a great stay at Palms by the Beach Convention Center and Resort in Marinduque, Philippines! This resort is near to the Balanacan port area with an approximate travel time of ten minutes, so, its less hassle to check-in. From the resort, you will have a view of the giant image of Nuestra Señora del Pronto Socorro or Our Lady of Prompt Succor, (A version of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception) patroness of Boac, capital of Marinduque . Resort staff were courteous and accommodating. Rooms are clean and spacious enough for the family or barkadas.

The resort is a member of the city tour where they can arrange tour packages for you. The great attraction of the resort is the view of calm water and mountains that surrounds the place plus the kubo in the bay area . There is 24-security service and a generator in case of brown-out. The function room is spacious enough for weddings, debut, conferences and other activities. And of course, the manager is very kind (Sir Joseph) as well as the resort owner (Tito Toy). It's a service that is beyond your expectations. I'm glad I was able to visit Marinduque, and I'm glad I was able to stay at Palms by the Beach! This is a place that will make you realize, Filipinos are really best in hospitality!

Attire is a major issue in swimming. I decided to write this article to help the beginners learn some tips of what to wear in an activity like swimming lesson.

Generally, standard swimming pool requires proper swimming attire. The very reason is to avoid discoloration of the water. If they will allow the people to swim in inappropriate wear, they will need to put more treatment, which requires higher maintenance.
The complete swimming attire consists of a head cap, goggles, swimsuit (female), swimming trunk (male). Head cap is used to lessen the friction of the water and gain more speed in gliding. It is also used to avoid distractions when swimming specially for swimmers with long hair. It also protects your hair from chlorine. According to www.enjoy-swimming.com , there are four (4) major types of swim cap. They are the: 1.) Latex and rubber; 2.) Silicone; 3.) Lycra; 4.) Others or Customized.
Papaya is my best partner especially before summer comes. It has been my habit to keep my body fit for summer though it would be better if I'm lean the whole year. I found out that eating this fruit in the evening with cereal is effective and the result is really amazing. Of course you should exercise too. This is highly recommended! Try papaya and get the best body for summer.
Philippines is really blessed with natural resources particularly in terms of water forms. In my own hometown in Camarines Sur, there are spring resorts that is great for travelers and resort lovers. The best of them all is the Masosu Spring Resort. This resort carries the name of the place "Masosu". It was called masosu due to abundance of "suso" (a black freshwater mollusk) in water areas such as ponds and rice fields. Suso is actually the main ingredient of the famous Filipino dish ginataang suso.
I discovered this pool in Pandacan. It is a 25 by 15 meters swimming pool located at Selya St. with a depth of 4 to 5 meters. This is such a great discovery. A great value for money for the residence of Manila. The entrance fee is only Php 80.00.

The Jacinto Ciria Cruz Swimming Pool is open daily from 8:00am- 5:00pm except Monday. The pool is managed by the City of Manila. The nearby landmarks are small fountain plaza, Ever Grocery, and a wet market. To reach the place, you can ride a bus from Feati University or SM City Manila. You can also reach the place riding a train (Philippine National Railroad) via Pandacan station plus one jeepney ride with a travel time of around five (5) minutes (walking distance).
Our team in a college swimming intramural competition harvested six (6) gold, two (2) silver and three (3) bronze medals from twelve swimming events held at Philippine Marines-Navy Swimming Pool-Manila. I guess, this was a great start for a beginner like me as a coach in a swimming competition. There were nine teams competed in the different swimming events. At the end of the competition, our team dominated the league.

In this event, I realized that coaching is really a challenging task. A combination of hardwork, passion and love for the sports is really important. I was blessed because my swimmers are dedicated and fast-learners. It was very hard in the beginning because forty (40 %) percent of them are zero knowledge in swimming when we started the training. But, in four weekends of practice, they improved a lot. And the result is really great.

In coaching, It is a must to know your swimmers in order to maintain their focus and performance during the training and in the actual competition . Let me share some of my personal tips in coaching.

1. Timetable. It is important that your swimmers are ready and skillful enough on the day of the competition
2. Proper nutrition. Performance is optimized when proper nutrition is included.
3. Proper execution versus speed. Speed is maximized if the the swimmers are used to executing the proper swim stroke.
4. Assignment. Take-home task could help them improve even when they are not in the water. There are body exercises that will maximize the muscles for better swimming performance.

Question:

What do you think is the formula of raising a champion swimmer?

Summer has ended. Heavy workloads are waiting. In tropical country like Philippines, end of summer is associated with more work and duties. Rainy season is the next problem because it will be followed with floods and typhoons not only in metro manila but almost nationwide.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

Water activities usually lessen due to rains. People get lazy to go to the pool to take a lap and even to go for other sports activities. We usually love staying at home cooking and craving some of our favorite dishes. This is something that we need to beat. Times like this, we need to be more disciplined and get some workout. If you don't feel to go out for swimming, you can stay at home and do simple exercises.

Despite of rainy season in the Philippines, there are swimmers who would still go for swim. I am personally one of those who loves to swim even rain is ongoing. My personal reasons are the following:

1. It is more challenging to swim when rain is present.
2. It is sunburn-free. No need to put my sunblock.
3. There are few swimmers in the pool.

You will not feel the same way but, in case you are really motivated to swim, I also listed some important considerations:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
1. Swim in the covered pool if possible. Uncovered pool can be source of water-borne diseases.
2. Check if there is thunder and lightning. Swimming in this condition is not allowed.
3. In case you accidentally drink some water from the pool, drink lactobiotic drinks after swim.
